About / a Carter Warrens research initiative

ABOUT

Blaque Baux is where Carter Warrens does its systematic research in the open — and puts most of it on the record as rejected, with the reason. What survives is governed, validated, and only then called real.

01

One engine, many directions — and a public trail of what failed.

Blaque Baux is an open, Julia-based systematic-research initiative: a single governed engine steered into a family of strategy sleeves, each pointed at a different corner of the market.

Every idea is tested against the same honest bar. Most do not clear it — and instead of hiding them, we keep them public as a research graveyard: the failed thesis, the constraint, or the risk finding stays visible so it can inform the next test. The handful that survive are built into governed drivers and validated before they are ever described as live. The corpus is the whole record, kept open on GitHub — live systems, work in validation, active research, and null results side by side.

02

The standard: publishing the failures is the point.

Anyone can point an AI at a market now. The edge is understanding what the data actually says — and being willing to show your losses. That discipline runs through everything here:

  • The red scorecard is the pointA rejected strategy, documented with its reason, is a result — not an embarrassment. Most of the corpus is exactly this.
  • Validate before liveNothing is called real on a backtest. It earns a governed paper track, then real money — or it stays research.
  • The tail is the whole storyReturns are fat-tailed, so a bare Sharpe misleads. We test normality first, and weight the crash as heavily as the average.
  • Flag the gap, don't fake itWhere the data isn't there, we say so. No proxy dressed up as the real thing.
03

Governance is the product.

The platform is built in Julia around a venue-agnostic execution controller and a Layer-3 live-money safety gate — preflight checks, idempotency, reconciliation, a high-water-mark and a kill switch. The research may use modern tooling, but no language model sits in the order path: every allocator emits a target book, and reproducible code routes it through the gate.

Performance is judged with a fat-tail toolkit, not a headline number: Jarque–Bera for normality before any mean-variance claim, Jensen's alpha and instead of Sharpe alone, and a crisis-correlation check — how a stream behaves on the market's worst days, the 2008 tell — before anything is trusted to diversify. The point is not a clever signal; it is a book you can actually run.

Carter Warrens.

Blaque Baux is a subsidiary of Carter Warrens — a boutique firm built on a simple observation: the execution capabilities that power the world's largest institutions shouldn't be reserved only for them. Carter Warrens brings that institutional-grade discipline — program management, transformation, and high-stakes delivery — to growth-stage companies, private funds, and public-sector organizations.

Its partners carry 40+ years of combined program leadership at global banks and market-infrastructure firms, based in the New York metro. Blaque Baux is where that discipline is turned on the markets themselves: systematic research held to an institutional bar, in the open.

Kareem Williams — Founder. A product-delivery and engineering leader with 20+ years building the trading, risk, and regulatory platforms behind capital markets — cash equities, swaps, FX, rates and credit derivatives — at firms including Morgan Stanley, UBS, Citi, Credit Suisse, BNP Paribas, and Mizuho. He pairs delivery leadership with real technical fluency — he reads and writes the code (Java/Spring Boot, REST microservices, React, Azure) — and holds an MBA in Management of Technology (NJIT), an MS in Finance (Pace), and the PMP and PMI-ACP certifications. Blaque Baux turns two decades spent building the infrastructure of these markets on the strategies that run on them. Full profile at carterwarrens.com →

Using the work / frequently asked questions

How to read, reproduce, and apply the research.

01Who is BLAQUE BAUX intended for?+
BLAQUE BAUX is built for researchers, quantitative developers, portfolio and risk professionals, students, family offices, asset managers, private-equity teams, hedge funds, and serious independent investors who want to study how systematic strategies are constructed, tested, rejected, governed, and monitored.
02How should I use the research and strategy catalog?+
Use the site as a research map rather than a menu of trade recommendations. Begin with the thesis and assumptions, inspect the implementation and evidence, review the risk and failure conditions, and reproduce the result independently before adapting anything to your own constraints.
03What is the difference between Labs, Corpus, Block, Capstone, and Tracker?+
Labs presents interactive studies. Corpus is the complete research record, including live, validation, active research, and null results. Block is the derivatives strategy reference. Capstone studies portfolio construction and variations above the individual sleeves. Tracker shows simulated sleeve performance against relevant benchmarks.
04Which tools and languages does the platform use?+
Julia is the primary research and governed-execution language. Python is used where its data, automation, or integration ecosystem is useful. The governing principle is reproducibility and clear interfaces, not loyalty to a language.
05How can Julia and Python fit into an existing workflow?+
Teams can use Python for data preparation, notebooks, orchestration, and established analytics while using Julia for research components, simulation, optimization, and controlled execution. Exchange data through explicit files, tables, APIs, or other versioned interfaces so each stage can be tested and reproduced independently.
06Can the strategies be used directly in a live portfolio?+
No strategy on the site should be copied directly into a live portfolio. The material is educational research, not individualized investment advice. Users must independently validate data, assumptions, costs, liquidity, tax treatment, legal constraints, implementation details, and suitability for their own objectives and risk limits.
07What do Live, Validation, Research, and Null mean?+
Live identifies work that has passed the project’s governance requirements and is being tracked under its stated operating conditions. Validation identifies candidates under further observation. Research identifies active investigations. Null is the public graveyard for ideas that failed, lacked sufficient evidence, or were rejected for risk or implementation reasons.
08How can researchers reproduce or extend the work?+
Start with the linked repository and its documentation. Preserve the original assumptions and baseline before changing parameters, data, or portfolio rules. Record each change, test it out of sample where possible, and evaluate tail behavior, implementation costs, and failure conditions rather than relying on a single headline metric.
09Is BLAQUE BAUX investment advice?+
No. BLAQUE BAUX provides educational research, software, documentation, and illustrative analysis. It does not provide personalized investment, legal, tax, or accounting advice, and it does not recommend that any person buy, sell, or hold a security or strategy.
10Will BLAQUE BAUX become an investment manager or fund?+
BLAQUE BAUX is currently a research and technology initiative, not an investment adviser, broker-dealer, fund, or asset manager. No future structure is being promised. Any regulated investment activity would be established separately and communicated only after the appropriate legal, operational, and regulatory framework was in place.
11Who owns and operates BLAQUE BAUX?+
BLAQUE BAUX is a Carter Warrens research initiative founded by Kareem Williams. Carter Warrens provides the program-management, governance, transformation, and execution discipline behind the work.
12How can an institution work with Carter Warrens?+
Carter Warrens works with organizations that need help structuring research, governance, delivery, risk controls, or technical operating models. Contact ceo@carterwarrens.com to discuss an advisory or collaboration need.
